Easy to use, fun and safe, these student-quality oil pastels help to build basic art skills in classrooms worldwide. Children can achieve oil painting effects without the mess of paint.
Junior Artist Oil Pastels produce bright, intense colors. They contain pigments that blend easily and last without fading. Ideal for texture rubbing, blending, scratch art, almost any coloring project.

folding palette is molded from lightweight plastic, so you can hold it steady for as long as you wish to paint. Both sizes have hinged thumb holes and are deep enough to hold short-handled brushes and small paint tubes.
Small Palette Box — Measures 8" × 8" (20 cm × 20 cm), unfolded. It has 5 large and 20 small paint wells. 
Large Palette Box — Measures 11-7/8" × 10¾" (30 cm × 27 cm), unfolded, with 5 large and 24 small paint wells.
Soft Pastels

Any soft pastels that you already have, at least 24 different colors (more is better!)



A pad of pastel paper, 12x18 inches or larger. Assorted colors is good, or any color you like (not white). Strathmore makes a great spiral-bound pad, labeled: Charcoal Assorted Tints 100% cotton 24 sheets.

Can of workable fixative. Krylon makes a good one labeled Workable Matte Fixatif.
Optional: erasers and pastel pencils

These materials are available at Utrecht, Michael's, Pearl Paint, Blick Art Supplies and A.C. Moore.

Paints: titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red deep, cadmium yellow medium, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, Chrome oxide green, burnt sienna, raw umber, yellow ochre. Optional colors: alizarin crimson, burnt umber, raw sienna, Gamblin portland grey medium

NOTE ON TUBE SIZES AND BRANDS:
all colors except white: 37 ml /1.25 oz, White: 200 ml / 6.75 oz.
As to acceptable brands, let price be your guide. Less expensive or "student" brands such as Winton or Academy oils are certainly acceptable. More expensive brands such as Gamblin, Windsor & Newton, or the very expensive Old Holland have a greater concentration of pigments, or color. The chains often have sales on specific lines.

Brushes: #10 filbert, #2 filbert,#6 round, #12 flat.
Note: Brush sets are acceptable. They should include flat and round types, in sizes #2 to #12. Price is an indicator of quality, with hog bristle being an economical choice, nylon synthetics such as sablette or taklon representing good value.
Painting media: odorless thinner/spirits (Turpenoid, Mona Lisa or similar). Please avoid turpentine! linseed oil 74 ml /2.5 oz.
Optional: small bottle of Liquin

Painting surfaces:
three 16" x 20" canvas panels
three 11" x 14" canvas panels, both usually sold in 3-packs.
Utrecht, Pearl and Michael's all have acceptable house brands.

Palette: 12" x 16" disposable palette pad OR a roll of freezer paper (much cheaper!). Optional: a sealable palette box is a transportable storage solution. Masterson makes a dedicated product , but a large, flat Tupperware container will suffice.

Miscellaneous: disposible gloves (recommended), two small containers for media (baby food jars work well), palette knife, rags or paper towels.

兒童藝術心理發展

根據布倫Bloom 1964年所著的“人類時質的穩定性與變異性”Stability & Change in Human Characteristics. 中記載:兒童在生命的前四年已奠定了一生智力發展的百分之 五十;四歲到八歲又奠定了另一半的百分之三十。

因此,越晚幫助兒童智力成長的努力,越難改變提高兒童智慧能力。兒童隨著腦部的發達,會以自力學習繪畫;J.達賓格Dobbing J.曾說:在比較幼小的時期,亦即六歲時,腦的大小已達大人的95% (達賓格,1967年)。蘇珊.藍格Susanne K. Langer 認為由眼睛所產生的直接知覺[在智能上是最原始的道具] 藍格,1948年。

兒童畫製作的視覺與運動,有助於兒童的生存與學習,且視覺與運動發展是平行的。羅蓬.凱洛格Rnoda Kellogg 著的“兒童畫的發展過程”中提及兒童能在年幼時有塗鴉的經驗,有助將來容易掌握寫字。另一方面就是自發的描畫而言,由於所有兒童都有著天生畫家的本能,故在進行美術教育時,應避免予以壓制性的指導,並允許其自由自在的塗鴉。

正如維奧拉所說:繪畫的目的,並不在養成畫家,而是要讓兒童在繪畫上行使其先天性的創造能力,且使之充分發揮,才不致窒息(維奧拉1936年)。
美國國家藝術學會主席強生博士認為,藝術表現能增進其他學科的能力,孩子的學習就是靠著視、聽、觸覺等感覺,只要能增進這些感覺能力,便可促進孩子學習。

在聖路易州研究藝術課程的陳格則認為,藝術是一項發現和決策的過程,孩子在藝術表現中經常要決定如何利用形狀、空間、用那些顏色、用多少?用多深?多淺?也許以一個成人的眼光來看這些都是雞毛蒜皮的事,但對孩子而言,這些都是學習作決定的好機會。

因此學前教育才是奠定小朋友日後發展的基石。以上各種兒童發展理論所經常提及學習藝術項目有助小朋友的智能進一步提高及多元化。主要是透過藝術訓練刺激小朋友的大腦思維活動,在繪畫和製作手工藝品時達至手、眼、腦協調;同時可提高小朋友的文化水平,學懂研究和欣賞美的東西。
