Please bring to class: Artist's acrylic tube paints in the following colors:

• Cadmium red medium • Alizarin Crimson Hue Permanent OR Acra Crimson • Cadmium Yellow Medium • Lemon Yellow OR Yellow Light Hansa • French Ultramarine Blue • Cerulean Blue • Titanium White • Y ellow Oxide • Burnt Sienna • Burnt Umber

For convenience, you may also wish to include the following colors if you don't care to mix them from the primary colors above:

• Sap Green OR Hookers Green • Cadmium Orange • Dioxazine Purple

Note: The suggested brand of paint is Liquitex. If you already own other brands of artist's paints, such as Grumbacher or Winsor & Newton, it's ok to use them as well. Most acrylic brands are compatible with one another. But if you must purchase any colors, please buy Liquitex. Please do NOT use craft paint (the kind that comes in small plastic bottles and is sold under names such as Folk Art, Delta, etc.) Craft paints are not suitable for fine art painting.

Brushes: • #10 or #12 flat • #6 or #8 flat or bright • #6 or #8 filbert • #4 or #6 round

Note: Purchase brushes that are designed for use with acrylics, such as synthetic nylon or Taklon brushes. Bristle brushes may also be used but they give a "scratchier" appearance. Avoid sable brushes, and brushes made only for watercolors and oils.

Acrylic gesso -- white Container for water, such as a large clean margarine tub, or Brush Basin Canvas or canvas board, 16x20

Palette -- you may use a clean Styrofoam tray from the grocery store (such as the kind meat and some vegetables are sold in), OR a shallow pan or tray made of plastic, metal or ceramic, OR a Styrofoam plate. If your budget permits, a Masterson Sta-Wet Palette (approximate cost: $14-17) is a worthwhile investment.

folding palette is molded from lightweight plastic, so you can hold it steady for as long as you wish to paint. Both sizes have hinged thumb holes and are deep enough to hold short-handled brushes and small paint tubes.

Small Palette Box — Measures 8" × 8" (20 cm × 20 cm), unfolded. It has 5 large and 20 small paint wells. 
Large Palette Box — Measures 11-7/8" × 10¾" (30 cm × 27 cm), unfolded, with 5 large and 24 small paint wells.
Soft Pastels

Any soft pastels that you already have, at least 24 different colors (more is better!)


A pad of pastel paper, 12x18 inches or larger. Assorted colors is good, or any color you like (not white). Strathmore makes a great spiral-bound pad, labeled: Charcoal Assorted Tints 100% cotton 24 sheets.

Can of workable fixative. Krylon makes a good one labeled Workable Matte Fixatif.

These materials are available at Utrecht, Michael's, Pearl Paint, Blick Art Supplies and A.C. Moore.

Paints: titanium white, ivory black, cadmium red deep, cadmium yellow medium, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, Chrome oxide green, burnt sienna, raw umber, yellow ochre. Optional colors: alizarin crimson, burnt umber, raw sienna, Gamblin portland grey medium

NOTE ON TUBE SIZES AND BRANDS:
all colors except white: 37 ml /1.25 oz, White: 200 ml / 6.75 oz.
As to acceptable brands, let price be your guide. Less expensive or "student" brands such as Winton or Academy oils are certainly acceptable. More expensive brands such as Gamblin, Windsor & Newton, or the very expensive Old Holland have a greater concentration of pigments, or color. The chains often have sales on specific lines.

Brushes: #10 filbert, #2 filbert,#6 round, #12 flat.
Note: Brush sets are acceptable. They should include flat and round types, in sizes #2 to #12. Price is an indicator of quality, with hog bristle being an economical choice, nylon synthetics such as sablette or taklon representing good value.
Painting media: odorless thinner/spirits (Turpenoid, Mona Lisa or similar). Please avoid turpentine! linseed oil 74 ml /2.5 oz.
Optional: small bottle of Liquin
Painting surfaces:
three 16" x 20" canvas panels
three 11" x 14" canvas panels, both usually sold in 3-packs.
Utrecht, Pearl and Michael's all have acceptable house brands.

Palette: 12" x 16" disposable palette pad OR a roll of freezer paper (much cheaper!). Optional: a sealable palette box is a transportable storage solution. Masterson makes a dedicated product , but a large, flat Tupperware container will suffice.

Miscellaneous: disposible gloves (recommended), two small containers for media (baby food jars work well), palette knife, rags or paper towels.

畫布：初學者可選用棉、仿麻 、半麻畫布。畫布尺寸可分為F（人物型Figure）、P（風景型Paysage）、M（海景型Marine）三種，從小至０號至大至數百號加以編號，亦可依個人需要加以不同尺寸的訂製。

顏料：油畫顏料種類繁多，不同廠牌不同等級，價位相當懸殊，購買時除了個人經濟能力外，顏料的耐久性也是必須考慮的重要因素，一般市售的油畫顏料大致可分為「學生用」及「專家用」兩種，當然顏料好壞會影響畫面的持久性，但並不能保證畫面的完美。材料的意義，除了本身材質的好壞之外，最重要的還是駕馭材料的能力，這也是學習的重點。　

溶劑：種類繁多，初學者較常用者如下：調色油(Medium)、無味洗筆油(Sansodor)、（松節油Turpentine)、補筆凡尼斯(Retouching Vernis)、等。　畫筆：油畫筆有圓筆、平筆、榛型筆及扇型筆等類型，並有軟、硬、長、短之分，軟毛 適合薄塗拖筆，如貂毛筆、獾毛筆等。硬毛如豬鬃筆等、短豬鬃適合厚塗，長豬鬃則厚塗拖筆兼顧。選購時，可各型大、中、小各選數支，待使用後再自行斟酌選購。　調色板：多為木製，因灰色調基底，適合不透明顏料之辨色，另有壓克力、玻璃等材質 ，底部可墊灰色紙，以利辨色。造型有橢圓、方形、摺壘等選擇（摺壘式調色板適合攜帶）。市售另有調色紙，用完可撕掉，亦相當簡便，惟白色底不適合辨色。　其他：油壺（放置調色油等媒劑）、密封洗筆壺（放置清洗畫筆之溶劑，如無味洗筆油Sansodor等，如洗筆油、松節油等）、畫箱、畫刀、調色刀、刮刀等皆為必備。

初學油畫材料準備

油畫顏料：如下　溶劑：調色油(083林布蘭)、補筆凡尼斯(Retouch牛頓)、無味洗筆油(Sansodor牛頓)。　畫筆：(牛頓專家級或學生級）2號（2支）4號（2支）6號（2支）8號（2支），油畫刷(3cm)，簽名筆。　其他：畫布（3F）、畫箱（牛頓,或MABEF寫生畫箱）、10F木製畫布夾、調色盤、畫刀、油壺、密封洗筆壺（小） 。　另外：袜布、面紙、舊報紙、紙膠帶 (寬)、取景框、筆山。
